Windows Experience Index:
Let’s get this out of the way now – I’ll be running this a few times over the weekend, including with a new install, but here’s what turned up the first time I ran it. This is with the updated drivers (see below). I’ll be running it before updating the graphics/chipset drivers. No settings have been tweaked.

Hardware and devices (Device Manager):
First off, you aren’t really going to lose any functionality. With a few driver updates and installs, you’ll be at nearly the same level with Windows 7 as you would be with the original Windows XP Home installation that came installed. Arguably, some of the functionality provided by either Acer-specific software or third-party software is taken care of by built-in software and features that are included with Windows 7, so you may not even lose any functionality. I haven’t yet transferred any of the 3rd party software over from the original install (I’ve installed Windows 7 on a separate hard drive so as to preserve the original), but I will be taking a look at that later today.

Here is before (left) you go through automatic updates and then after(right):

This is what the automatic updates includes:

On the left is the Atheros Wireless driver (AR5007EG) that’s installed with Windows 7 by default. On the right is the Atheros Ethernet (AR8121/AR8113/AR8114) driver that is installed through automatic update:

These are the before and after Intel Mobile Express 945 chipset/graphics updates:

As you can see, the 945 chipset/graphics drivers did change. What those changes are, I haven’t looked at yet – it could very well be related to Windows 7 (they are probably based on Vista drivers). I will probably run some before/after benchmarks just to see.
Original Windows 7 drivers: Version 8.15.10.1590 (Oct 28, 2008)
Updated Windows 7 drivers: Version 8.15.10.1620 (Dec 17, 2008)

The other chipset drivers (ICH7-M) did not change – they still register as the default Windows 7 drivers (and they are probably Vista-based) – Version 6.1.7000.0 (Jun 21, 2006).
