Announced/Review: Gateway NX100X (CNET)

As with the E-100Mb there has been no formal announcement, but there has already been a review by CNET of this model, which didn’t rate it too highly (6 out of 10). I saw this yesterday, but was holding off until the formal announcement from Gateway, but what the heck. As with the E-100Mb, it’s using an unnanounced Ultra Low Voltage (ULV) Core Solo from Intel (I’m sure Intel is very happy). The NX100X uses the 1.2GHz U1400 CPU (as opposed to the E-100Mb which uses a 1.06GHz U1300 CPU).

Announced: Gateway E-100Mb

Although there has been no formal announcement, Gateway has not only jumped back into the ultraportable game, but they are doing it with a new CPU and, as of today, they are taking orders for it. The Gateway E-100Mb is a very lightweight notebook that is using a new Ultra Low Voltage (ULV) Intel Core Solo CPU, the U1300 (1.06GHz), that no other manufacturer is currently using, and which Intel hasn’t mentioned before. While not as fast as other CPUs in the Intel Centrino/Core lineup, it promises a much longer battery life. This new notebook is geared towards consumers, and starts at around $1700, and has a 12.1-inch widescreen display.

Rumors of the Dell Latitude 420

Just a few days ago I mentioned the announcement of the Samsung Q35, which replaced the laptop that was the basis for the Dell Latitude X1.

CNET Asia is reporting that a replacement for the Latitude 410 could be just around the corner. It’s a good candidate for an Intel Core Duo update – it shares some of the same features of the X1, minus the lighter weight and the widescreen display and falls in between the X1 and the consumer-oriented Inspiron 710M (which I could see going with a Intel Core Solo CPU.

This week Dell has announced several major updates to its higher-end and/or larger lineups – the Dell Latitude 620 and 820, and the Precision M65 and M90, all of which received the Intel Centrino platform updates.

Announced: Panasonic CF-74 Toughbook

Panasonic has announced one of the first of their Toughbooks to sport an Intel Core Duo CPU and Centrino chipset, the Panasonic Toughbook CF-74 or Toughbook-74. While it’s on the heavy side for an ultraportable (barely under 6 pounds), the weight can be attributed towards the heavy duty Magnesium-Alloy case, the harddrive protection, the spill-resistant keyboard and touchpad, and the daylight-capable touchscreen LCD display. It has a 13.3-inch display, which unfortunately is not widescreen (probably due to touchscreen costs). It will be available in April of 2006, and MobileWhack.com is reporting that it will start at around $3000.
