Intel’s Merom Core Duo CPU To Ship in 3rd Quarter

TG Daily is reporting that Intel will be shipping the Core Duo T5000 and T7000 series’ CPUs (aka Merom) in volume in the third quarter of 2006. This is apparently in response to AMD’s upcoming offerings. The Merom is the successor to the currently shipping “Yonah” Core Duos.

The Meroms are going to support 4MB cache (which will be big for mobile users wanting a lot of performance, not that the currently shipping Yonah Core Duos don’t offer that), as well as 64-bit capabilities. Past reports indicate that the Meroms are literally drop-in replacements, so we could see notebook lineups that are currently shipping with Core Duos switch over to the Merom series with few problems. If they truly run about the same power and heat-wise as the currently shipping Core Duos, they could easily find their way into ultraportable notebooks.

Intel Finally Announces Ultra Low Voltage Core Solo CPUs

According to CNET News.com, Intel has finally, formally, introduced the Ultra Low Voltage Core Solo CPUs that are in Fujitsu’s Q2010 and Gateway’s E-100M and NX100X.

The CPUs were leaked going back to February when details began leaking out about Gateway’s re-entry into the ultraportable business. The model numbers are the 1.06GHz U1300 and 1.2GHz U1400 Core Solos, and while they are not nearly as fast as the higher-end Core Duos and higher-clocked Core Solos, they offer the ability to run without an active cooling fan, something that many people going for the “small as possible” style of notebook look for.

There were rumors that these would make their way into Ultra Mobile PCs (Origami), as well as the “MacBook” replacements for the iBook or some kind of “MacTablet” from Apple. It could still happen that they end up in UMPCs or MacBooks/Tablets.

Gateway Ships E-100M – More Models To Come

Gateway E-100MReg Hardware is reporting that the Gateway E-100M is now shipping. The E-100M sports a similar CPU (Intel Core Solo U1300, Ultra Low Voltage (ULV), and unannounced by Intel) to the Fujitsu Q2010 that was just announced for the North American market. The E-100M weighs in at just over three pounds, sports a widescreen 12.1-inch display, and does not have an internal optical drive.

Fujitsu Lifebook Q2010 in North America (Plus Using Unannounced CPU)

Looks like Fujitsu will be rolling out the Lifebook Q2010 in North America. According to CNET News.com, Fujitsu unveiled the Q2010 to a North American audience, complete with information on the CPU that will be driving the ultraportable high-end laptop (high-end as in very small and expensive). Apparently it’s going to use the same CPU that popped up in the Gateway NX100X – an Ulta Low Voltage (ULV) Intel Core Solo CPU that was not formally announced or promoted by Intel. During the announcement/briefing, a price of $1999 was mentioned, however Fujitsu later said that was not finalized

Core Duo: Intel’s Best CPU Ever?

The Tech Report is reporting that Intel’s Core Duo CPU maybe their best CPU ever. They took a Core Duo along with a new desktop/mini motherboard that supports it, and tested it against several desktop and mobile systems (including different CPU platforms from Intel, AMD, etc.).
