Acer’s 8.9-inch UMPC/UltraPortable – Cheaper than Asus Eee PC

Acer Aspire One Update: Acer’s offering is now known as the Acer Aspire One

DigiTimes is reporting that some of the manufacturing costs, specifically the FOB (Free on Board), for Acer’s 8.9-inch UMPC is expected to be around $50 less than Asus Eee PC 900.

What this means, is that Acer is looking at around $350 – 400 (USD) for these UMPCs, once they hit the market.

Asustek has a slightly higher price, with the eventual market price to be around $400 – $500.

This is due in part, to Acer having a better economy of scale, however Acer is looking at a launch date of May, while Asustek may roll out their 8.9″ sub-notebooks sometime in April in order to beat Acer to market.

Still no firm date set for the HP Compaq 2133, which is expected to compete in this area of the market (albeit at a higher price point).
