Review: Averatec 3715 (Pocket-lint.co.uk)

March 24, 2006

Averatec 3700 Series
Stephen Patrick at Pocket-lint.co.uk recently took a look at the Averatec 3715. The 3715 is one of the most affordable ultraportable notebooks (around $900 USD and up), with a 12.1-inch display (non-widescreen), an internal optical drive, and uses an AMD Sempron 3000+ CPU (around 1.8GHz).

Two of the major issues they found (as well as other reviewers): battery life and the graphics, but both of these are part of the reason for the cheaper price - as Stephen points out: In many respects it still seems that you get what you pay for and while Averatec has managed to put together a lightweight and highly portable machine this is at the sacrifice of performance.

Review: Averatec 4100 (LAPTOP Magazine)

February 24, 2006

Averatec 4100 Series
LAPTOP Magazone has put together a review of the Averatec 4100 (4155), a notebook with a 13.3-inch widescreen, powered by a 64-bit AMD Turion CPU, and that comes with a DVD writer.

They weren’t happy with the battery life, saying What we can’t dispute is the 4100’s mediocre battery life. The Turion 64 consumes only 25 watts of power, but this system lasted less than 2.5 hours while unplugged. That’s below average for notebooks in this class…, nor were they happy with the integrated graphics chipset, but overall, they gave it 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Top 5 Ultraportables - January 2006

January 31, 2006

Small-Laptops.com’s top five ultraportables for January 2006, based on page views:

1)Fujitsu LifeBook P1510D
2)ASUS W5F
3)Dell Inspiron 700M
4)Sony VAIO VGN-TX690P
5)Averatec 1050

Note: I’ve added the next 5/6 so it’s a Top 10/11 List, to help with comparisons to February’s list.

6) Flybook V3
7) Averatec 3700
8) Fujitsu LifeBook P7120
9) Lenovo ThinkPad X60 and ThinkPad X60s
10) Acer TravelMate TMC204TMi C204

The Fujitsu P1510D - not a surprise, this 8.9-inch widescreen convertible notebook has garnered a lot of praise (and continues to do so). It now ships with Windows XP Tablet PC edition, and that has generated more interest. It is surprising that this is the only convertible - Tablet/Notebook hybrid, to make the roundup, as this type of ultraportable has generated a lot of interest in the past.

The ASUS W5F is a surprise - it was very nearly the top in views, and it was only announced at the beginning of the month.

The Dell Inspiron 700M (soon to be phased out in favor of the 710M which is virtually identical) and Averatec 1050 are not surprising - both are some of the best deals you can get for an ultraportable, with the Dell 700M dipping below $1000 USD.

The Sony VAIO VGN-TX690P is not a surprise either - Sony makes a darn nice ultraportable with an 11-inch widescreen display and a very lightweight chassis. It’s at the upper end cost-wise, but you are getting your money’s worth.

Review: Averatec 1050 (IT Reviews)

January 23, 2006

Averatec 1000 Series
IT Reviews has a new review up of the Averatec 1050. The Averatec 1050 is an Ultra Low Voltage Pentium M - powered ultraportable notebook with a 10.6-inch widescreen display. The 1050’s strong points include its size and battery life, but its hardware is starting to get a little dated, although for the price it’s still an extremly good deal, and it has an attractive/eye-catching design (some have compared it to the iBook).

Interestingly enough, it’s aimed at home users, but as IT Reviews points out:

this is one ultra-portable that’s aimed at the home user, although why a home user would want an ultra-portable is an interesting point. However, weighing just 1.6kg, with a big hard drive and built-in DVD combo drive, it could still be the business traveller’s ideal weapon.
