Announced: Everex CloudBook Max

April 2, 2008

Everex Cloudbook Max Everex announced a new ultraportable laptop to compliment the 7-inch Everex CloudBook.

It’s the Everex CloudBook Max and it comes with an 8.9-inch 1024×600 widescreen display. It will be competing with the Asus Eee PC 901 and possibly the HP Compaq 2133 (depending on price). It offers a larger harddrive and more memory than the regular CloudBook. It won’t be available until the second half of this year.

Among the changes besides the obvious display size:
- Upgraded CPU - 1.6GHz Via C7-M
- 2MP Web camera (built-in)
- GPS Receiver (built-in)
- Integrated Mobile WiMax (Sprint Xohm)

Dimensions are not much larger than the original CloudBook:
Width: 9.4 inches (238.8mm)
Depth: 6.9 inches (175.3mm)
Height: 1.1″ inches (27.94mm)
Weight: Less than 2.2 pounds (0.998kg)

Everex CloudBook = DreamBook (Upgrading)

March 5, 2008

Everex Cloudbook Over at CloudBooker, they are doing things with the 7-inch Everex CloudBook that are pretty darn amazing.

Among the modifications being highlighted:
- Adding internal GPS
- Adding upgraded networking
- Internal 4-port USB hubs

Some of it involves using things like Dremel tools, cutting out stuff, and removing stuff (especially the camera).

Note: I don’t advocate doing any of that. I just find it fascinating.

If you cut me loose (pun intended) with a Dremel tool adn a CloudBook, you’d end up with an expensive hunk of plastic.

Review: Everex CloudBook (NotebookReview)

March 2, 2008

Everex Cloudbook JerryJ over at NotebooReview.com published a first thoughts review of the Everex CloudBook last week.

The CloudBook is a 7″ ultraportable notebook (or subnotebook) competing with the Asus Eee PC. Unlike the Eee PC, it has a mechanical hard drive, giving it a much larger storage capacity.

They’ve posted videos in their first look athe CloudBook, including comparing it to the Eee PC size- and function-wise.

Although they haven’t finished their full review, so far they prefer the Eee PC.

Everex CloudBook: In Stock at Wal-Mart, First Impressions

February 22, 2008

Everex Cloudbook Earlier today, we mentioned that Wal-Mart had the Everex CloudBook listed on their website. They are now showing the 7″ Asus Eee PC competitor as being in stock and ready to go.

Meredith Farkas has posted her initial impressions after having received her pre-ordered CloudBook. She was impressed by the display and the keyboard, but not so much with the preloaded software. For her, it’s a definite secondary computer/laptop: I bought this computer so that I wouldn’t have to lug around my 15-inch MacBook Pro at conferences. For that, this machine will definitely meet my needs. I can connect to the Web, I can use Open Office, and all on something that is ridiculously light……. If this was someone’s primary computer, it would be a disaster.

Jamfish has also received her CloudBook and has unboxed it and started using it. She seemed to echo some of sentiments that Meredith and others have expressed: I’m enjoying my Cloudbook. Though rough around the edges, I like the portability of the machine, and that I can have an easier handle on it than most laptops(the hole is actually more helpful for holding than people might think!). It has a very clear screen, touchpad is actually a fun convinience, and I’m learning to type faster on this thing by the hour. The gOS(like on any developing Operating Systems), could use some tweaking, but, hasn’t given me too many problems that I can’t handle

Buy an Everex CloudBook From Wal-Mart?

February 22, 2008

Everex Cloudbook I’m slightly confused. Either the Everex CloudBook is delayed or it’s not delayed or it’s for sale or it’s not for sale.

You can clearly see it on Wal-Mart’s Website, and it’s showing “OUT OF STOCK” (may never have been in stock to begin, may have been just somebody adding the SKU information for an upcoming shipment). Wal-Mart is selling it for $399 with a $98.88 2-year service plan. They’ve got all of the right specifications listed, etc., so it looks like it’s not an accident or based on vague information. No idea if it will show up in the brick & mortar stores or if it will be online only.

Meanwhile, CloudBooker is reporting that ZaReason is not going to carry the CloudBook. You may remember that ZaReason was selling pre-orders of the CloudBook, before “selling out” of them (they never had them in stock apparently).

Turns out they lost money refunding some of those pre-orders, as CloudBooker has this message sent to would-be CloudBook buyers: Due to the amount of money we have lost granting refunds (due to bank transaction fees) we can no longer sell the Cloudbook.

This is a train-wreck of a launch so far. It’s got a little potential, just sounds like there is a lot of confusion amongst its partners. Wal-Mart will straighten that out pretty quick, if history is any indication.

Everex CloudBook Delayed

February 20, 2008

Everex Cloudbook Looks like the Everex CloudBook has been delayed again.

DigiTimes is reporting that heavy snowfall in China created transportation and manufacturing problems (i.e. no electricity or intermittent electricity) at FIC’s factory in Suzhou, China.

The expectation is that the would-be Asus Eee PC rival will not hit the retail channels in Taiwan until the middle of March.

Everex did say that CloudBook shipments would take place this week, but we’ll have to wait and see.
