Several Ultramobile PC CPUs Benchmarked

August 20, 2007

Over at ULTRA MOBILE PC TIPS, several UMPC CPUs were reviewed:

- 1GHz Intel Pentium M (baseline CPU)
- 900MHz Intel Celeron
- 800MHz Intel A110
- 1GHz Via C7-M

Of note, the above CPUs are found in the following machines:
- 800MHz Intel A110: Fujitsu’s U1010
- 1GHz Via C7-M: ASUS T83, Gigabyte U60, and the OQO Model 02.

Of note, all ran slower than the baseline Pentium M, however, in theory, they should have a longer battery life (and considering the size of the devices I mentioned above, you aren’t exactly buying these to be multimedia laptops.

Review: OQO Model 02 (jkOnTherun)

August 7, 2007

OQO model 02 James Kendrick has his hands on a OQO Model 02 which fits into a rather unique category - it’s not exactly a laptop, but not exactly an Ultra Mobile PC (it’s considered an UMPC, but it does have a physical keyboard). It’s powered by a 1.2GHz or 1.5GHz VIA C7M ULV (Ultra Low Voltage) CPU, has up to 1GB of memory, a 30GB or 60GB hard drive (1.8″), and the feature that makes this such a unique machine: a 5″ 800×480 touchscreen (active digitizer).

Among the comparisons he makes, he compares it size wise to a Fujitsu LifeBook P1610.

His biggest impression so far: The biggest impression I have so far is how good the integrated keyboard really is. You can type very well with the keyboard and the little track stick works as advertised.

PC Magazine Laptop (and Desktop) Buying Guide

August 1, 2007

ASUS U1 U1F PC Magazine is running their annual PC Magazine Buying Guide: Desktops and Laptops. Ultraportables have gained quite a bit of exposure this time around (or rather there seem to be more models mentioned that are lighter and faster than last time around).

Ultraportables were mentioned in two sections - those on the road a lot, who would favor a smaller size and weight, and those who are limited in the space they have available to them.

Quote:

For the businessman constantly on the go, whipping out your laptop on an airport security-check line is labor enough. Lugging it through numerous airports trying to make connecting flights is a whole other ordeal. You’ll want a system that won’t weigh you down (or make you permanently lopsided). We think a sub-4-pound ultraportable is the way to go. Advances in technology also make it possible for PC manufacturers to integrate optical drives without exceeding the 3-pound barrier.

Under the Road Warrior section, these ultraportables are featured:
- Lenovo ThinkPad X60
- Toshiba Portégé R500-S5002
- Panasonic Toughbook CF-W5
- OQO model 02

Under the Cramped Space Dweller section, they mention:
- ASUS U1F
- Sony VAIO VGN-SZ370P

Review/Commentary: OQO Model 02 (GottaBeMobile)

June 18, 2007

OQO model 02Warner Crocker over at GottaBeMobile.com has published a lengthy article about “Why the OQO Model 02 Isn’t For Me“, where he goes into detail about his likes and dislikes, and where he sees the OQO Model 02 fitting into the general scheme of things.

The OQO Model 02 is one of the smallest computers around running Microsoft Windows XP or Vista, with a 5-inch widescreen display (and weighing just around one pound!). It was around before UltraMobile PCs (UMPCs) really gained traction, and some lump it in with those (although the price is substantially more than many UMPCs).

Hands-On: OQO Model 02 (tnkgrl Mobile)

OQO model 02
tnkgrl Mobile has put together a two-part series on the OQO Model 02, the ultra-ultraportable. She gets into the size, screen brightness, and comparisons between the pre-production Model 02s and the Model 01+s, as well as accessories, the slider and track stick, and EVDO performance.
