- 4-Cell Battery

Dell Inspiron Mini 9 - $80 Off of Windows XP Model

March 13, 2009

Dell Inspiron Mini 9 Dell is running another “Days of Deals” special, and through tomorrow, they have an Inspiron Mini 9 for $279 after $80 off. This is for the Windows XP Home edition with an 8GB Solid State Drive (SSD) and 1GB RAM, which makes it a very good deal. It’s an even better deal than last week’s deals. The only limitation is the memory issue - it appears that 1GB of RAM maybe the maximum it handles.

Dell Home and Home Office:
- Days of Deals - Mini 9 only $279 after Instant Savings

Specifications - $279:
- Obsidian Black or Alpine White
- Windows XP Home
- 1 Year Warranty
- 1GB DDR2
- 8GB SSD

For $50 extra, you can add these two features, which are worth it:
- Upgrade to 16GB Solid State Drive (SSD) (adds $40)
- Upgrade to 1.3MP Webcam (adds $10)

Built-in Bluetooth would add an additional $20.

Dell - More Inspiron Mini 9 Deals, Advice

March 6, 2009

Dell Inspiron Mini 9 Every few weeks, Dell has some very good deals on their 8.9-inch Intel Atom-based Inspiron Mini 9 netbooks. You can pick up the base for $249, but some of their pre-configured models with better features, and some of the upgrades are on sale or discounted.

For the most part, I would recommend against the baseline $249 model - the Ubuntu Linux distribution is good distribution for these ultraportables (and Dell has done a lot of work on their particular installs), but the storage is a 4GB Solid State Drive (SSD), and it wouldn’t take much to fill that up if you are offloading photos or video to it. I know that’s not what people intended these devices for, but that’s what people are doing with them.

If you are leaning towards an Inspiron Mini 9 and your budget is around $400, this is what I would do:

Visit the Inspiron Mini 9 page at Dell Home and Home Office

You can select the $299 model (normally $319) to get the Windows XP option, otherwise select the $249 baseline model for Linux.

Microsoft Windows XP Home model - $389
Specs: 1GB RAM, 16GB Solid State Drive (SSD), 1.3MP Webcam.
1) Select Obsidian Black as the color
2) Standard 1 year warranty
3) Select 1GB DDR2 RAM/Memory - adds $25
4) Hard Drive - select 16GB Solid State Drive (SSD) (add $40)
5) Integrated Webcam - $25 extra for 1.3MP, ($15 for 0.3MP)

Ubuntu Linux 8.04.1 - $379
Specs: 1GB RAM, 32GB SSD, 1.3MP Webcam
1) Select Obsidian Black as the color
2) Standard 1 year warranty
3) Select 1GB DDR2 RAM/Memory - adds $25 (2GB is $75)
4) Hard Drive - select 32GB Solid State Drive (SSD) (add $65)
5) Integrated Webcam - $25 extra for 1.3MP, ($15 for 0.3MP)

Some notes:
- If you don’t plan on video chatting or using Skype, you can save $25. If you do plan on video chatting, Skype, etc., I highly recommend the 1.3MP webcam over the 0.3MP Webcam. It’s only a $10 difference, but the video is much improved on the other end (assuming the person you are talking to has a good internet connection).
- $59 extra for a two year warranty with the added in-home repair if you qualify isn’t bad
- $20 more gets you Bluetooth 2.1
- Depending on the model, you maybe able to go up to 2GB of RAM using third party memory, if you are comfortable with doing it yourself. Some models don’t offer that option.

Amazon.com - Deal of the Day - Samsung X360-34G ($1049.99)

March 2, 2009

Samsung X360 This is kind of a surprise. If you are in the US and have been thinking about the ultraportable 13.3-inch Samsung X360, Amazon.com has the X360-34G as their “Deal of the Day” today. This is probably one of the cheapest ultraportable deals with an Ultra Low Voltage (ULV) CPU - Samsung claims it’ll get you up to nearly 8 hours of battery life.

List Price: $1,899.00
Price: $1,049.99 & eligible for free shipping with Amazon Prime
Save: $849.01 (45%)

Note: There is a $300 rebate listed, however that expired yesterday. The deal today is much better.

Specifications:
- 13.3″ 1280×800 LED-Backlit display
- Intel Ultra Low Voltage SU9300 Core 2 Duo (1.2GHz)
- INtel GMA 4500MHD Graphics
- 3GB DDR3 (1066MHz) RAM
- 1280 GB HDD (1.8″)
- 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi
- Bluetooth 2.0
- 6-cell Battery
- Microsoft Windows Vista
- Fingerprint Reader

The listed weight is 2.9 pounds - lighter than some netbooks/ultraportables with smaller displays. It partially achieves this by ditching the optical drive, similar to Apple’s MacBook Air, so there is not an optical/DVD/CD drive included.

Asus Eee PC 901 Price Drop?

February 27, 2009

Asus Eee PC 901 With Asustek rolling out cheaper models with more features, such as the $375 Asus Eee PC 1000HE, and with Acer dropping the starting price on the 8.9″ Acer Aspire One, it was bound to happen that they would either drop some models or reduce the prices.

A few weeks ago Asustek’s CEO said they would be reducing the number of Eee PC models. Today, several online retailers in the United States started listing $100 rebates for certain Asus Eee PC 901 models. It covers both the 12GB Solid State Drive (SSD) versions as well as the 20GB versions (12GB SSD = Windows XP Home, 20GB SSD = Linux). From what I’ve seen, the rebates end March 8, 2009.

Some Examples (all prices are after rebates):
- Amazon.com - EEEPC901-W001 - Linux, White, 20GB SSD, $267.99
- Amazon.com - EEEPC901-BK002X - Windows XP, Fine Ebony, 12GB SSD, $279.99
- Amazon.com - All Eee PC 901 models
- Buy.com - EEEPC901-BK001 - Fine Ebony, Linux, 20GB SSD, $269.95
- Buy.com - EEEPC901-BK002X - Fine Ebony, Windows XP, 12GB SSD, $279.99
- OnSale.com - EEEPC901-BK001 - Linux, 20GB SSD, Fine Ebony, $268.99
- OnSale.com - EEEPC901-BK002X - Windows XP, 12GB SSD, $266.99

Specifications: Intel Atom 1.6GHz CPU, 1GB RAM, 12GB or 20GB Solid State Drive (SSD), 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth, Linux or Windows XP, 6-cell Battery

I’m leaning towards them trying to clear out some models, either because of competing with the Asus Eee PC 1000HE as far as price, or perhaps introducing new models within a month or two, perhaps with the new chiclet-style keyboards that are popping up on the 1000HE and the Eee PC T91 or with more flash-based storage.

Keep in mind that CeBIT 2009 is next week, and Asustek is bound to be introducing a few new models.
