Acer Aspire One – WiMAX

Netbook Almost a month ago, at an Acer global press conference held in Budapest, Acer made some announcements in regards to where it was going to be expanding the 8.9″ Aspire One lineup. Among those announcements and discussions, were that 3G options would be added in some areas as early as this month, while Acer planned on adding WiMAX capabilities by 2009.

Well guess what? Mark Spoonauer at LAPTOP Magazine managed to temporarily get his hands on what maybe the first netbook (or at least one of the first) to officially have Mobile WiMAX capabilities. Officially in the sense that some netbook owners have already been modding their netbooks to add in this or similar capabilities.

He apparently came across it accidentally, but had the presence of mind to take a video of him playing a video from Hulu.com over the WiMAX connection as well as loading up a few websites and then doing bandwidth tests at Speedtest.net. Although it was highly unscientific, he was able to get 6.7 Mbps down and 2.8 Mbps up.

For now, they don’t know if it was a one-off demonstration unit or if it’s something that will be officially coming to market. It’s interesting given the comments made by Acer last month.
