Xandro Presto Beta Hands-On (LAPTOP Magazine)

Xandros Presto Linux Last week, Xandros released a beta of Presto, a Xandros-based Linux distribution designed for laptops/netbooks and ultraportables as an “instant-on” OS environment. It’s considered a “pre-boot” environment that works with Windows XP and Windows Vista-based systems.

It allows you to quickly boot into an environment where you can do a quick check of email or you can browse the web. You can also access your Windows’ data as well as play media files (music, etc.). It includes Firefox for web browsing, as well as Skype for VOIP, plus applications to look at or edit documents you created with Microsoft Office. There’s also an application store with apps that are tailored for Presto.

Joanna Stern at LAPTOP Magazine first tried to install it with the new 10.1-inch Acer Aspire One AOD150, however there were some install problems, with the result being that they installed it on an 10-inch Asus Eee PC 1000H. She mentioned that the download/install file is only around 14MB in size. Connectivity was simple and fast. She’s included several screenshots showing off the interface as well as Hulu.com streaming, etc.

Intel Reported to Postpone Menlow Atom CPUs

Intel Atom DigiTimes is reporting that Intel will be temporarily postponing two of its upcoming Menlow-based Atom CPUs to sometime in mid-April.

These are primarily intended for Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs), however they could find their way into other devices such as netbooks. The CPUs affected are:

Intel Atom Z550
– 1.2GHz
– Supports Intel US15W chipset
– Features Burst Performance Technology (BPT) which can automatically adjust core frequency depending on performance and can reduce power consumption.

Intel Atom Z515
– 2.0GHz
– Supports Intel US15W chipset
– Also supports Intel UL11L chipset (a low-power/ultra-low-power chipset)

Both CPUs are listed as having an average power consumption of 0.22W, with a Thermal Design Power (TDP) of 2.4W. Intel would not comment on the release dates.

Samsung NC20 in US – Delayed Until April

Samsung NC20 Earlier this month, we mentioned that the 12-inch Samsung NC20 would be available this week from NewEgg (March 16 to be precise).

This is an exclusive distribution deal for the USA.

Unfortunately that’s been delayed until the first week of April, according to LAPTOP Magazine, but there is some good news. The US-bound NC20 has 5900 mAH high-capacity battery – models available outside of North America have a 5200 mAH battery. That should be matched by a 13% or so increase in battery life.

The only model available will be black, and will retail for $549 (it’s around $480 overseas). If you’re interested in another color/model, keep in mind that with the NC10, Samsung originally wasn’t going to carry some models/colors, but later on, a black option for the NC10 was offered.

This will be the first VIA Nano-based netbook/ultraportable laptop available in the US.
