HP compaq 2230s Announced
August 6, 2008
HP Compaq has announced a new ultraportable 12.1″ laptop geared towards small and medium businesses, the HP Compaq 2230s.
It’ll probably share some components and designs with the 12.1-inch HP Compaq 2730p.
There are currently half a dozen pre-configured models, ranging from $999 - $1,649 USD, with processors ranging from Intel Celerons all the way up to an Intel Core 2 Duo T9600 (2.8GHz, 6MB L2) with a 1066MHz Front-Side Bus.
I’ve not really seen this before - 8GB is listed as the maximum memory, and to drive the point home, the HP website mentions that 2x 4GB modules are needed to obtain - it couldn’t have been somebody making a mistake in one location.
It’s based on Intel’s GMA 4500MHD integrated graphics, has an HDMI output, features 2.5″ SATA harddrives all the way up to 320GB, along with HP’s 3d DriveGuard to protect the harddrives (using motion sensors).
Ship dates on some models, for US customers, lists 8/13/2008.

jkkmobile points us to a video up on YouTube that was uploaded yesterday, and purports to be the Lenovo IdeaPad S. It looks like there are four colors - black, pink, silver/white, and a red that looks close to the IdeaPad U110’s red.
(for a few still images from the video, along with illustrations, see the IdeaPad S10 Gallery page).

Announced: Dell Inspiron 13
July 29, 2008
Today, alongside the Dell Studio Hybrid (a very small low-power desktop), Dell has announced the Dell Inspiron 13.
The 4.5-pound (2.04kg) Dell Inspiron 13 is a low-cost 13.3-inch laptop designed for budget-minded consumers and students. In fact, it’ll be available for purchase starting next week at Wal-Mart stores, for $699 (with limited options) - specifically August 3rd.
If you want to customize it, it’ll be available in the latter part of August at the official Dell.com online store, with various options (Wi-Fi options, Bluetooth, etc.).
This represents a new model in the Inspiron lineup, and even breaks from tradition with a redesigned hinge (easily seen at the link above).
Among some of the interesting and new features:
- Slot-loading optical drive (a feature it shares with the 13.3-inch Apple MacBook)
- Touch-sensitive controls for media (volume, etc.)
- 8-in-1 memory card reader
No word on what the CPU and graphics chipsets will be. If I were to take a guess, I’d say Intel. Details are sparse right now. I’ll post updates as I receive them.

Lenovo ThinkPad X200 - New Images, Comments
July 28, 2008
For those looking forward to the upcoming Lenovo ThinkPad X200, the Lenovo team posted half a dozen new images online last week. They showcase the major change to the ThinkPad X-series, namely the move to widescreen (and for the first time, the entire ThinkPad lineup will be widescreen). They also show off the UltraBase as well.
You can see the full-size keyboard, as well as the extended battery. It’s apparent that this will be a smaller laptop than the previous non-widescreen ThinkPad X61 and that it has some of the features of the 13.3-inch ThinkPad X300
From a Design Matters posting, one of the Lenovo ThinkPad team members had this to say about the X200:
For the tried and true ThinkPad loyalist, we still have you covered with the more traditional design details you have come to expect. I love our new X200 almost enough to surrender my X300. Almost.

Acer Aspire One in Stock (US), Also MSI U100 Updated at Amazon
July 14, 2008
Some fairly significant news tonight - for the first time that I’ve seen, the 8.9-inch Acer Aspire One is showing up in stock at a US retailer (we’ve already seen it in stock in Canada).
It’s showing online - for $379.99.
Specifications:
- Model #: AOA110-1295
- Part #: LU.S020A.012
- Color: Seashell White
- OS: Linpus Linux Lite
- Memory: 512MB (Maximum 1.5GB)
- Hard Drive: 8GB Solid State Disk (SSD)
- Battery Life: 3 hours
- Weight: 2.19 pounds
Also, a slight change on the MSI U100 at Amazon. Model MSI Wind U100-002LA (Windows XP Home, Black, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive) is now properly showing the MSRP of $479, which reflects the price of the 3-cell battery versions (which is in line with other retailers). It’s still showing 3-5 weeks, but obviously the entry has been recently updated.
It appears the floodgates are finally starting to open on the Intel Atom-based netbooks. Now if the 6-cell batteries would just start rolling out…
If you know of any other retailers carrying any of these in stock (the MSI U100 or the Acer Aspire One or some of the others that haven’t been too widely available in the US or Canada, or anywhere for that matter), please leave a comment or contact us.
