Last week, Steve Jobs confirmed that Apple will be moving from flourescent lamps to Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) for the displays of their laptops (Apple.com/hotnews/AGreenerApple). He said they planned on doing this before the end of 2007.
It would appear that they are moving aggressively towards this goal. DailyTech is reporting that the 13.3-inch MacBooks are well on their way to having LED-backlit displays:
Reports confirmed that AU Optronics and Chi Mei Optoelectronics all have LED-backlight LCD panels that are under review by Apple. Au Optronics and Chi Mei Optoelectronics are further down the line with Apple, having 13.3-inch and 15.4-inch panels already certified by Apple.
Apple’s 15.4-inch MacBook Pro line of laptops are already using the new panels, and the new 13.3-inch certifications indicate that Apple will be transitioning its MacBook line soon.
Macworld has a good rundown on what you need to know about LED-backlit LCD displays.
