Lenovo Olympic Ads and Laptops
August 11, 2008
If you’ve watched the Olympics for any amount of time (something that’s not hard to do given how many hours are being broadcast this time around), you may have seen some interesting commercials from Lenovo.
Over on Lenovo Connections, they’ve posted YouTube videos of all of the ads that Lenovo has been running.
I will admit to having seen the ad for the Lenovo ThinkPad X300. It’s the “sumo” ad in case you missed it, and it was a.. unique to say the least. There are also ads for the ThinkPad X200 as well as the ThinkPad SL Series (SL300, etc.).
If you head over there, you can also vote on which is your favorite. Offbeat, but cool to see advertising for ultraportables on TV.

ECS G10IL and Sylvania MESO - Hands-On, Video Webcast (LAPTOP Mag)
August 8, 2008
The folks at LAPTOP Magazine (well Joanna Stern) have been incredibly busy the past few days.
First-off, a hands-on with the ECS G10IL. The ECS G10IL is a 10.2-inch netbook, one that Joanna calls “The Sexiest Netbook Yet”, and it’s powered by an Intel Atom CPU. It’s slightly larger than others in its class - the keys are slightly larger and are flat, similar to an Apple MacBook. She believes it will give Lenovo a run for their money in the design department. She considers it a potentional contender to knocking the MSI Wind and Eee PC 1000H off the throne in the 10-inch category.
Second, a hands-on with the 8.9-inch Sylvania g Netbook Meso which is also powered by an Intel Atom. She mentions it’s thicker, but shorter than the Acer Aspire. She’s also included a video of it.
Finally, here very shortly (1pm EST, 12pm CST), there is going to be a live webcast (you can access it here) that revolves around the G10IL and the Meso.
This is something new for LAPTOP Magazine, and they’ll be taking questions from viewers, as well as chatting with people from a few other mobile websites.

Lenovo IdeaPad S9 / S10 - Hands On / Video
August 7, 2008
A few days ago, Xavier at Notebooks.com got his hands on the upcoming 8.9-inch Lenovo IdeaPad S9.
The S9 and S10 are Lenovo’s first foray into the netbook / sub-notebook market, and Notebooks.com is one of the first sites to have a video preview (maybe even the first).
The S9 is based on the S10’s chassis (just a smaller display) and starts out at $399. Unfortunately it will not be available in the United States, at least not this year - it’s just the 10.2″ S10 for us right now (that seems to be happening with quite a few netbooks).
The video gives a good preview of the S9 / S10 - it looks really solid and really well made as far as the chassis and display, with a nice design. Unfortunately it was not fully functioning, so no benchmarks or anything of that nature.

Gigabyte M912 Mini-Review (LAPTOP Magazine)
August 6, 2008
Joanna Stern at LAPTOP Magazine promised a mini-review of the 8.9″ Gigabyte M912 and she has delivered.
As mentioned yesterday, the M912 is one of the first convertible netbooks / mini-notebooks to offer Tablet PC functionality, and it had some some high expectations, to say the least, which were not met (at least when reviewed). Even removing Norton Antivirus (which slowed it waaay down), it still booted Windows Vista rather slowly. That being said, it has a resistive touchscreen, and it appears the touch functionality worked well (well enough to ignore the stylus).
The model reviewed is the Gigabyte M912v. Joanna mentions a Gigabyte M912m that will have an LED-backlit display that will be much brighter / sharper. They did not release any performance benchmarks or battery life (but will be doing so in a later review). Keep in mind that this will run around up to $700 if you import it into the US (it’s not available here).

Gigabyte M912 Unboxing, Video
August 5, 2008
If you want to see the kinds of ultraportable devices that we in North America will probably never see (unless we pay extra to import it), head over to the LAPTOP Magazine Blog - Joanna Stern’s dealer (her Taiwanese mini-notebook dealer that is) has shipped them a Gigabyte M912.
The M912 generated a lot of buzz in the US and Canada, with it’s 8.9-inch convertible display (converts between a regular laptop form factor and a Tablet PC-like device). The M912 is, so far, the only convertible laptop in its class - it’s about half the price of the Fujitsu LifeBook P1620, but the P1620 is running a much more powerful CPU (versus the M912’s Intel Atom).
They will be putting together a full review in the future.
