Speculation on an Apple Mac Tablet

Macsimum News has one heck of a doozy on their hands – they’ve turned up a patent for Apple that makes a very strong case for some kind of Tablet form factor. People are already hacking together “Mac Tablets“, and this adds an interesting twist to things – an Apple Tablet would really shake up the mobile arena (maybe not as much as the iPod did to the portablet MP3 player market, which had been around for quite some time before the iPods showed themselves).

Review: Averatec 1050 (IT Reviews)

IT Reviews has a new review up of the Averatec 1050. The Averatec 1050 is an Ultra Low Voltage Pentium M – powered ultraportable notebook with a 10.6-inch widescreen display. The 1050’s strong points include its size and battery life, but its hardware is starting to get a little dated (although for the price it’s still an extremly good deal).

Software Security/Tracking Options – Orbicule Undercover, Absolute

In kind of a follow-up to the mention of the biometric/fingerprint-reader hardware security options, there is also software available for those who don’t have that option, that may help you recover a stolen notebook.

Gizmodo mentions a piece of software for tracking stolen Macs (iBook, PowerBook, MacBook), called Orbicule Undercover. In addition to emailing IP information, it sends other information that may help identify the person(s) who stole or received a stolen Apple notebook. Undercover costs $29.99 and the money is refunded if your notebook can’t be tracked down.

In the course of the discussion that followed, a Gizmodo user pointed to a Windows-based piece of software, from Absolute Software, called CompuTraceComplete and CompuTrace LoJack, that has similar goals, and has the added bonus of a “Absolute Recovery Guarantee (PDF)” of up to $1000 dollars if they are unable to help you recover it within 60 days.

Announced: First of the Intel-Powered Apple Laptops

Apple has announced the first of their Intel-powered portable lineup , and it’s not an ultralight 13-inch widescreen iBook as so many have rumored – instead it’s a 15-inch “MacBook Pro“. The new MacBook Pro is powered by an Intel Core Duo 1.67GHz or 1.83GHz CPU.
