Announced: MSI MEGABOOK MS-1058

MSI is rolling out the MEGABOOK MS-1058, one of the first ultraportables that utilizes AMD’s Turion 64 X2 Dual Core CPU (2.0GHz). It weighs just over four pounds, has a 12.1-inch widescreen display, and up to 2GB of memory. It utilizes ATI’s Radeon Xpress 200M chipset, and looks like it has a choice of ATI graphics options, either the Xpress 200M or X300SE. A DVD-Writer is standard, and it has the choice of a 4-cell or 8-cell battery.

We should start seeing a lot more of these 64-bit dual-core notebooks popping up over the next month or two. The Turion 64 X2 was announced just two days ago, but it looks like MSI already had these in the pipeline. It does utilize DDR2 memory (some some mobile offerings from AMD didn’t), and has more power-saving/conservation features built into the CPU.

No word on availability outside of Japan.

Review: HP Compaq

CNET Asia has one of the first reviews of the HP Compaq nc2400, the new ultraportable from HP Compaq that features a 1.2GHz Low Voltage Core Solo from Intel. It has a 12-inch display, is just under an inch thick, and weighs under three pounds. As they point out, you don’t get the same power as you do from Core Duo-powered notebooks such as the ThinkPad X60s. As a result, they gave it a 6.3 out of 10.
